Calling All Ontario Geocachers: Geocaching in Algonquin Park

As we surge ahead to the summer of 2020, more and more people are searching for alternative methods of outdoor recreation and exploration. One of the fastest-growing recreational activities here in Ontario is the art of geocaching. So, what is geocaching, exactly? In layman’s terms, geocaching is a family-friendly treasure hunt set in the 21st century. Using a smartphone as a GPS (as well as the Geocaching app), “geocachers” can hide or seek containers filled with unique items. These containers are often called “caches.” Coordinates can be obtained by using the app—the rest is up to you and your adventurous ingenuity. There is a treasure trove of caches located inside Algonquin Provincial Park, one of the quietest four-season destinations in Canada.

The Geocaching Capital of Canada

While we’re revered as experts on canoeing, snowmobiling, and sustainability, Algonquin Eco-Lodge is also one of the province’s foremost geocaching authorities. To us, geocaching is nothing but a good, old-fashioned “high-tech treasure hunt.” Because GPS’s are only accurate from a distance of approximately three metres, triangulating a cache is no simple task. Over the past 20 years, Algonquin Provincial Park has officially become the “Geocaching Capital of Canada,” according to a panel of professionals. In fact, we’ve hidden a wide variety of caches in these stunning woodlands that aren’t on the official Geocaching app (download here). If you pop onto our website, you’ll notice that we list 12 unique caches; only six of them are public.

A Family Geocaching Journey to Algonquin Eco-Lodge

A few of the most common questions that we receive are: “Is geocaching fun?”; “What are the park’s best geocache finds?”; and “Do you have a how-to geocache manual?” Well, yes, geocaching is exceedingly fun, especially if you love a challenge and the outdoors. The best finds base solely on the individual. And we always tell folks to start creating their own how-to manual as they learn the sport. We can answer just about any question on the subject.
