International Polar Bear Club at the Algonquin EcoLodge!

Only the truly brave and hardy (or the truly foolish!) attempt to join this elite group of adventurers.

Polar Bear Club at the ecolodge!

As everyone knows, polar bears are majestic creatures of the high arctic. And they also like COLD water! So, to become a member of this exclusive club, you must do one of 2 things (and preferably both!). Either submerse yourself in our conveniently placed "hole in the ice" (don't worry - it's not deep!), or make a Snow Angel. In your bathing suit! For those of you who aren't familiar with this art form, a snow angel is the imprint you leave in the snow when you lie down in it and wave your arms and legs about (to look like wings and tail feathers).

Now this may all seem rather "reckless" but, remember, the outdoor hot tub and sauna are only steps away. It may seem hard to believe, but once you have been in the hot tub for 20 minutes you get so warm that you don't feel the cold. Even though your hair has frozen solid!

Here is a short video (Quicktime MOV format - 2 MB, or Windows Media AVI format - 3 MB) of a group doing a Polar Bear Dip during the day. They were just kids - true adventurers stay in even longer!

For all new members inducted into this exclusive club there is a "Certificate of Membership" (and Survival!!) to commemorate their bravery/foolishness, that you can show to all your friends, once you return from Algonquin Park.

We do ask for a small (voluntary) donation for your Certificate, and all money collected will be sent to the World Wildlife Fund. The WWF has an "adopt a polar bear" program in place that is trying to safeguard the polar bear's Arctic home, understand and reverse the deadly effects of climate change on polar bears, and work toward eliminating toxic pollutants in the Far North.
